YOM KIPPUR
Today Judaism celebrates the holiest day of the year - ‘day of atonement’ with prayer and fasting, directing members of the faith to confess their sins of the past twelve months.
It was the commencement of Yom Kippur in 1973 when combined Arab forces backed by Russia, gave the Israelis their greatest scare since the creation of their new State in 1948. The Israelis vowed, never again would they be caught napping.
Over nineteen days, centred in the Golan Heights and the Sinai, Arab and Jewish blood spilled onto contested soil… and the struggle between the sons of Abraham continues.
