We were reminded of some of the global players in the Middle East by Washington Institute Director of Military and Security Studies, Michael Eisenstadt. The briefing, organised by NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel and the Jewish Board of Deputies (Lynda Ben Menashe), sponsored the event – ‘Iran’s Lengthening Shadow’.

Observers who focus solely on local tensions between Arabs and Israelis in Israel/Palestine can miss the bigger drama of Soviet military support for Iran that flows through to the terrorist organisations, Hamas (Gaza), Hezbollah (Lebanon) and Fatah (West bank). The United States seeks to provide a balance in the region.

The struggle between global players adds yet another layer of complexity to producing long-term peace in the region.
