CAN YOU SOLVE THIS MYSTERY?

My wife discovered these two intriguing objects hidden away in a drawer and we have no idea what they are. They are both made of brass and the larger one, on the right is inscribed with intricate shapes of birds, flowers and a sailing ship.

The one on the right has been opened by inserting its key into a slot located at the end of the piece. As you insert the key, the two parts slide apart.

The piece on the left is in its unopened state.
