THE DARK SIDE OF CHOCOLATE
These kids love their chocolate, but children on the Ivory Coast have never tasted the chocolate made from the cocoa beans they collect. Take a minute to catch their story.
Cocoa farmers are only paid $2 a day – that’s less than the cost of 1 block of chocolate!! Average family size is 8.
Children as young as 5 work on the farms using toxic chemicals without protection and handle sharp tools like machetes up to 8 hours a day.
These children are deprived of an education that could lift them out of poverty
Poverty drives child labour.
Chocolate companies make a huge profit.
It would take as little as 14 cents extra cost per 100g chocolate to change this.
WE CAN:
Look for certification logos when we buy chocolate.
Read and sign theonline petition – freedomunited.org https://www.freedomunited.org/advocate/
Contact chocolate companies and ask them to give their workers a better deal – use the wording of the online petition…..
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
