Who is Nadav Lapid?

Nadav Lapid is an internationally acclaimed Israeli filmmaker and writer known for his formally bold, fiercely uncompromising explorations of national identity, masculinity, and the absurdities of state-sanctioned violence. 

After studying philosophy and history at Tel Aviv University, Lapid pivoted to cinema, making a major splash with his award-winning debut feature Policeman (2011) and the psychological drama The Kindergarten Teacher (2014). 

He solidified his standing as one of global cinema’s most vital contemporary voices by winning the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for his blistering, semi-autobiographical exile drama Synonyms (2019), followed by the Cannes Jury Prize-winning Ahed’s Knee (2021). 

A staunch dissident of his home country’s right-wing political shift, Lapid continues to challenge the boundaries of political art; his satirical drama Yes (2025) targeted the complicity of the artistic class during the Gaza war, an unyielding creative ethos that frequently places him at the very centre of intense, global cultural debates.
