WHY DOES ISRAEL BAN FOREIGN MEDIA FROM GAZA?

Critics of Netanyahu's right-winged government highlight the number of Palestinian media deaths.

The government's response is that the IDF does not intentionally target journalists, and attributes the high casualty rate to the inherent dangers of reporting from the front lines of a conflict, where Hamas operates within civilian infrastructure. The IDF has frequently published intelligence briefs, captured documents, and payroll logs, alleging that certain slain reporters held dual roles—serving as journalists while simultaneously acting as military commanders, intelligence operatives, or tech specialists for militant groups.

How many journalists have been killed?

Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ): Documents 209 Palestinian journalists and media workers killed (207 in Gaza and 2 in Israeli detention centres). CPJ tracks a broader regional total of 263 media deaths, which includes individuals killed in Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, and Israel.

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ): Documents at least 234 Palestinian journalists and media workers killed out of 261 total casualties across the Middle East.

Gaza Government Media Office: Reports a significantly higher figure, putting the number of slain media professionals at over 240–270. Their criteria include all media workers, delivery personnel, and local commentators, without enforcing the same strict journalistic definitions as international press groups

A major obstacle to verification is the lack of direct physical access. Because independent international journalists and watchdog researchers are restricted from freely entering the Gaza Strip, teams rely heavily on remote forensic analysis, local peer testimony, and satellite documentation to verify precisely how and where a journalist died.

A war correspondent's occupation is a dangerous one. Their testimony from serving in the conflict zones is clear about that, including both World Wars, and Vietnam. However, their photos and reports provided a valuable picture of the action.

If the IDF are to be taken seriously and want credibility, allow foreign independent media access to the conflict zones.
